DRAKE OVERBECK ENDURED A LIFE-ALTERING SWIMMING ACCIDENT ON JULY 4 IN NORTH COMMERCE LAKE. THANKFUL FOR SOME FRIENDS WHO WERE ABLE TO PULL HIM FROM THE WATER, AND THE NURSE WHO WAS IN THE VICINITY; THEY DID THEIR BESTTO STABILIZE HIM ON A BOATAND CALL 911. COMMERCE TOWNSHIP FIRE AND RESCUE WAS QUICK TO RESPOND AND KNEW THAT DRAKE NEEDED TO BE SENTTO A TRAUMA-RATED HOSPITAL. HE WAS RUSHED TO PROVIDENCE NOVI, WHERE HE WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN INTO EMERGENCY SURGERY FOR A BROKEN NECK. WITH A WAITING ROOM FULL OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY, AND HIS BROTHER DEVON AND COUSIN TYLER, WHO
ARE BOTH MEDIC FIREFIGHTERS) BY HIS SIDE, WE PRAYED WITH HEAVY HEARIS AND MANY TEARS.
DRAKE MADE IT OUT OF SURGERY ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT HE WOULD NEED ANOTHER SURGERY IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. THE FAMILY WAS HOPEFUL WITH SURGERY AND RESTAND THE START OF THERAPY IN THE ICU OF THE HOSPITAL, THAT DRAKE WOULD BEGIN TO SHOW SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT.
CURRENTLY, DRAKE IS PARALZED IN HIS WRISTS, HANDS, LEGS AND FEET.
DRAKE HAS BEEN DISCHARGED FROM THE HOSPITAL AND IS IN PROGRESSIVE THERAPY AT THE UM SPINAL CORD INPATIENT REHAB CENTER. HE IS RECEIVING EXCELLENT CARE AND IS PARTAKING IN SOME OF THE MOST PROGRESSIVE THERAPY IN THE COUNTRY.
THE OVERBECK'S HAVE EXPERIENCED A LOT OF TRAUMA AND TRAGEDY OVER THE PAST YEAR. IN 2023, DRAKE'S MOTHER, MICHELE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PANCREATIC CANCER. SHE UNDERWENT THE INVASIVE WHIPPLE SURGERY AND BATTLED THROUGH MULTIPLE ROUNDS OF CHEMOTHERAPY AND OTHER THERAPIES. THE OVERBECK FAMILY FOUND OUT A WEEK AFTER DRAKE'S ACCIDENT THAT SHE IS CANCER-FREE!! HOORAY!!
DRAKE IS WORKING HARD IN HIS THERAPY WITH HOPES OF RETURNING TO MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY TO COMPLETE HIS SENIOR YEAR AND TO WELCOME HIS SISTER, SKYLAR, WHO IS A FRESHMAN THIS YEAR.
